Timeline: era background bands
MaxTwo to five named eras run as full-height tinted bands across one proportional year axis, each spanning exactly its supplied inclusive years, with its name and year range in a header strip. Four to twelve dated events sit as markers on a central line inside the band of their year, with measured label cards alternating above and below on leaders. A year ruler runs under the bands; years outside every era stay unbanded.

When to use it
Use when events read best against the periods that frame them: a company history across leadership or strategy eras, product generations with their launches, policy or regulatory periods with key decisions, a career across roles. Band widths show how long each era lasted, and each event sits inside its era at its year. Positions are whole years, so events in one year share a position; at most two events per year. Not for overlapping periods (use a phase-bar timeline), day- or month-precise dates, or undated stages.
