four curved domains · central Confusion zone · Clear-to-Chaotic cliff fold · placed situations

Snowden's four Cynefin domains share one field at their fixed positions, Complex and Chaotic on the unordered left, Complicated and Clear on the ordered right, divided by curved seams that meet under an irregular central Confusion zone. Each domain carries its practice line and the supplied situations placed in it; the boundary between Clear and Chaotic is drawn as a distinct cliff with a fold at its foot.

When to use it

For sorting supplied situations, incidents, decisions or kinds of work by how cause and effect relate, so a team agrees how to respond: incident triage, strategy choices, portfolio or project work types, leadership coaching. Domains, positions and practices follow Snowden and Boone (HBR 2007) with the Cynefin Company's current names (Clear for Simple or Obvious, Confusion for Disorder). It does not rank situations, score complexity, or choose a response.
